A Travellers Guide and Tourist Information for Benalmadena - Spain

Spanish Flag
Benalmadena is split into two sections with Benalmadena Costa the part of most interest to the many holiday makers who visit this popular Costa del Sol resort every year. Benalmadena lies 15km south west of Malaga airport between between the resorts of Fuengirola and Torremolinos. Benalmadena Costa is a purpose-built coastal resort extending 8km along the coast which climbs steeply up into mountains behind. The cable car from the coast up to the top of the mountain is a well worthwhile trip but not recommended for those with a fear of heights. Benalmadena has more than 8km of blue flag beaches some of which are in small coves and often have rocks at the ends of them. The sand is not as fine as some of the other resorts but a lot of work is done to maintain the cleanliness of all of the beaches. There are sun loungers and shades available for rent all the way along the front. Cheap flights and holidays to Benalmadena are available all year round.

The annual Malaga fair in August is an exuberant week-long street party with plenty of flamenco and 'fino'(sherry). The fair commemorates the re-conquest of the city by Isabella and Ferdinand in 1487 and lasts for ten full festive days. This castanet-clicking fiesta starts off with a bang, literally, with an impressive firework display in the park which can be seen for miles around, not just in Malaga. The best view is from the Port if you happen to be on a cruise ship or can persuade a sailor friend to drop anchor there for a few hours. The following day the people take to the streets, the women in flouncy flamenco dresses, to dance, drink and, generally, make merry. The traditional dance of Andalucia is called 'Sevillanas' comprising four distinct dances with plenty of finger-clicking, foot-stomping and, above all, feeling. This is where 'dancing in the street' can be appreciated spontaneously 'en vida' which is really the only way Spanish dancing should be performed. .
